Margo P. Cohen,Piero P. Foa: The Brain as an Endocrine Organ

The Brain as an Endocrine Organ

Description

In the middle of the 17th century, the great French philosopher Rene Descartes wrote (L'Homme, J. Le Gras, Paris, 1669) that a suitable stimulation of the brain results in two types of "movements": exterior movements, designed to seek desirable ends and to avoid undesirable or harmful ones and interior movements or "passions" which through the release of "animal spirits" regulate the heart, the liver, and other organs. When it appears appropriate to meet a threat with force, the passion of rage causes the release of strong spirits, whereas when avoidance appears to be the better choice, the passion of fear causes the brain to release weak spirits. We do not know what influence, if any, Descartes had on the thinking of Walter B. Cannon (Bodily Changes in Pain, Hunger, Fear and Rage, Appleton and Co. , New York, 1920), of Hans Selye (The Story of the Adaptation Syndrome, Acta, Inc. , Montreal, 1952), ofG. W. Harris or of R. Guillemin (Hypothalamic-Hypophysial Interrelationships. A Sym- posium. c. c. Thomas, Springfield, 1956), but it is interesting to reflect upon the durable value of great ideas which constantly resurface even if modified by other ideas and by new techniques, as if propelled by a preordained intellectual imperative.

L Pichon: The Brilliant World of Tom Gates

The Brilliant World of Tom Gates

Description

The top-selling U.K. series for middle-grade readers now crosses the pond! Meet Tom Gates. When his teachers don t have their beady eyes on him, he likes to draw pictures and write about stuff, like last summer s worst camping vacation ever (five merits!), or how much he hates sitting next to nosy Marcus Meldrew, the most annoying boy at school. All Tom really wants is to score tickets to see the best band ever, Dude3, when they come to town, and to impress Amy Porter, who is very nice and smart (but is currently ignoring him). Tom s teachers think he is easily distracted and "lacks focus," but that s a bit harsh can he help it if his grumpy big sister, Delia, made him late for school (again), or that last night s homework had to be sacrificed to stave off a vicious dog attack? Master of excuses, creative storyteller, and middle-school comedian extraordinaire, Tom Gates is guaranteed to get kids turning the pages and keep them laughing."

This new edition features even more questions in every format: * 350 extended matching, single best answer questions, rank ordering and free text completion Adventures of Ideas free pdf * Nearly 80 algorithm completion questions * Nearly 50 picture questions, with all photographs presented in full colour The book has been favourably reviewed by trainees, trainers and programme directors alike and is on the recommended reading lists of a number of VTS schemes. It is essential reading for candidates preparing for the AKT and also for training practices and libraries. It has been used by trainers to plan teaching sessions and tutorials and by established GPs to help them with appraisal and revalidation. - Strategies for alternative schools, afterschool programs, and the emerging youth development movement Considered one of Jung's most controversial works, Answer to Job also stands as Jung's most extensive commentary on a biblical text. Here, he confronts the story of the man who challenged God, the man who experienced hell on earth and still did not reject his faith. Job's journey parallels Jung's own experience--as reported in The Red Book: Liber Novus--of descending into the depths of his own unconscious, confronting and reconciling the rejected aspects of his soul. This paperback edition of Jung's classic work includes a new foreword by Sonu Shamdasani, Philemon Professor of Jung History at University College London. Described by Shamdasani as "the theology behind The Red Book," Answer to Job examines the symbolic role that theological concepts play in an individual's psychic life.

Ervin Somogji: The Responsive Guitar

The Responsive Guitar

Description

These landmark publications offer info from one of the most-revered luthiers of our times. No publication has ever presented trade secrets and practical information to truly change the way a person makes or appreciates the steel-stringed guitar. Ervin Somogyi is a Hungarian-born master luthier whose guitars are renowned for their responsiveness and tone - trademarks for a great guitar. After almost five decades of making this instrument, teaching and writing about the development and construction of the guitar, Somogyi reveals the methods, techniques and philosophy behind his legendary instruments. "The Responsive Guitar" is about physics, dynamics, acoustics and construction of the guitar. It's about the mechanics of tone; what materials to build with, when to add or remove wood for maximum benefit, and why those techniques work. Somogyi explains in exquisite detail how the guitar makes sound, and what musicians and luthiers need to know in order to appreciate a really well-made guitar. This book sets the foundation for the matching volume "Making the Responsive Guitar". "Making the Responsive Guitar" is the second volume on a two-volume set of books that set out the principles and methods of building fine hand-made guitars. Where Volume 1 sets up the knowledge, this book is about how to build a guitar, from the very first step to the last. "This book will be the textbook for guitar makers for the next generation." (Jason Kostal, Roberto-Venn School of Lutherie). "The violin has Stradivri, The Classical guitar has Torres. The steel string guitar has Somogyi." (Jordan McConnell The Duhks). "The 2-book Boxed Set": This limited edition silver-embossed, facsimile-autographed, slipcase holds both books. These books are essential for anyone who is interested in a comprehensive account of the modern guitar, and how a highly responsive guitar is made. Author Ervin Somogyi is arguably one of the most knowledgeable hand-makers of steel string guitars in the world. He has been in the ranks of American Lutherie since before it is official beginning in 1972. Somogyi has written over 100 articles on every aspect of lutherie and taught and lectured widely in US, China and Japan.

Reggie McNeal: A Work of Heart: Understanding How God Shapes Spiritual Leaders

A Work of Heart: Understanding How God Shapes Spiritual Leaders

Description

Revised and updated edition of the classic work on spiritual leadership In A Work of Heart, bestselling author and missional expert Reggie McNeal helps leaders reflect on the ways in which God is shaping them by letting us see God at work in the lives of four quintessential biblical leaders: Moses, David, Jesus, and Paul. McNeal identifies the formative influences upon these leaders, which he sees as God's ways of working in their lives: the same influences at work today forming leaders for ministry in our times. He explores the shaping influence of culture, call, community, conflict, and the commonplace. * Offers guidance for church leaders to let God shape their hearts from the inside out * Reggie McNeal is the author of the bestselling book Missional Renaissance * Gives reassurance for maintaining perspective while doing the demanding work of ministry The book includes illustrative stories of contemporary leaders opening their hearts to God's guidance.

Euripides' Medea is one of the most often read, studied and performed Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family ebook pdf of all Greek tragedies. A searingly cruel story of a woman's brutal revenge on a husband who has rejected her for a younger and richer bride, it is unusual among Greek dramas for its acute portrayal of female psychology. Medea can appear at once timeless and strikingly modern. Yet, the play is very much a product of the political and social world of fifth century Athens and an understanding of its original context, as well as a consideration of the responses of later ages, is crucial to appreciating this work and its legacy. This collection of essays by leading academics addresses these issues, exploring key themes such as revenge, character, mythology, the end of the play, the chorus and Medea's role as a witch. Other essays look at the play's context, religious connotations, stagecraft and reception. The essays are accompanied by David Stuttard's English translation of the play, which is performer-friendly, accessible yet accurate and closely faithful to the original.

Ms Lily Hoang: A Bestiary

A Bestiary

Description

Literary Nonfiction. Essays. Winner of the 2015 Essay Collection Competition, Selected by Wayne Koestenbaum. "Rarely have I come across tenderness, venom, and fire held so intimately, so exquisitely, as in Lily Hoang's A BESTIARY. This book would be impressive enough as a collection of finely-forged fragments, but as it weaves itself into an even more impressive whole, my hat came off. Lily Hoang writes like she has nothing to lose and everything at stake."—Maggie Nelson "A BESTIARY is a work of great subtlety, precision, intelligence, daring, and emotive keenness. It seems completely contemporary (by which I mean that it is unlike anything I've read and that it makes me want to change my own writerly procedures). With head-long, reckless, improvisatory gestures, Lily Hoang prompts us to rethink what literature today can dare to aspire to. Her intellectually magnanimous book's position on the threshold between recognizable 'literature' and some other vanguard form of performance/utterance made me feel happy and stimulated and dizzy (in a rapturous way) while I was reading it."—Wayne Koestenbaum "The most perfect use of fragmentation, myth, language, fairytale, and terrible beauty that I have ever seen in my life. I'm swooning. My faith in what writing can be has been restored."—Lidia Yuknavitch

Description

How do you prepare for an Ebola outbreak? What about a hurricane, flood, tornado, or house fire? It all starts with developing a practical disaster preparedness plan for your family. The Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness is the only book that provides step-by-step instructions for developing that plan. It emphasizes practical preparations and avoids the scare tactics of many other books. The 440-page handbook is a complete guide to creating a practical disaster preparedness plan. The 3rd Edition has been expanded to cover every important topic, including food storage, water purification, home improvements, electricity generation, backup heating, personal protection, financial preparations, communication systems, disaster preparedness networks, evacuations, life-saving first aid, and much more. An entire chapter is also provided for people with special needs, including the elderly, those with young children, people with disabilities, and pet owners. Inside the handbook are hundreds of photographs, tables, and useful tips. The new larger 8" x 10" format also includes easy-to-copy worksheets to help organize your family's preparedness plans. Working through the steps identified in this book will prepare your family for nearly any disaster, whether it be natural disasters making the news daily (e.g., earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and tsunamis), or high-impact global events, such as electromagnetic pulse attacks, radiological emergencies, solar storms, or our country's impending financial collapse. Discover why this handbook is being praised by emergency management experts, preppers, church groups, survivalists, bloggers, soccer moms, and people from every walk of life. Now is the time to take responsibility for your family's safety by putting into place important emergency preparations.

Jack London: The Call of the Wild

The Call of the Wild

Description

Jack London's novels and ruggedly individual life seemed to embody American hopes, frustrations, and romantic longings in the turbulent first years of the twentieth century, years infused with the wonder and excitement of great technological and historic change. The author's restless spirit, taste for a life of excitement, and probing mind led him on a series of hard-edged adventures from the Klondike to the South Seas. Out of these sometimes harrowing experiences and his fascination with the theories of such thinkers as Darwin, Spencer, and Marx came the inspiration for novels of adventure that would make him one of America s most popular writers. "The Call of the Wild," considered by many London's greatest novel, is a gripping tale of a heroic dog that, thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in man s world and returning to nature. Adventure and dog-story enthusiasts as well as students and devotees of American literature will find this classic work a thrilling, memorable reading experience."

"Spares no details." Starred "Publishers Weekly" Review From the imagination of Marge Piercy comes yet another stunning novel of morality and courage, a bold adventure of women, men, and the world of tomorrow. Teren Santoro, leader of the Inquisition, wants her dead. And her former friends, Raffaele and the Dagger Society, want to stop her thirst for vengeance. Adelina struggles to cling to the good within her. But how can someone be good, when her very existence depends on darkness? Best-selling author John Bevere reveals how all of us were "meant for more," extraordinarily created and intended for a life that is anything but ordinary. The Call of the Wild download ebook Here is the roadmap for your journey of transformation. You are marked for a life that far surpasses the usual definitions of success or fulfillment.
